USA-Brazil Friendly Action

I briefly forgot about this game after the Cards and Reds had their little dust up in the first inning.  I think those fireworks have ended, so I’ll settle for Yahoo updates.  Brandon Phillips is 0/7 in the series.  Just sayin’.

Right now, the US is 0-0 with Brazil….now it’s 1-0 Brazil.  Perfect timing for them.

Anyway, we’re kind of sending out our World Cup team one final time before we turn our eyes toward 2014.  Brazil is fielding a young side, but as with all Brazilian sides, they’re very, very skilled.

Friday 5 – World Cup Draw Edition

The stage for the World Cup Draw

We skipped last week’s Friday 5 in honor of Thanksgiving.  Now we’re back with the first all-soccer Friday 5 in honor of today’s World Cup Draw from South Africa.  So far all we know are the teams who won’t be playing the United States in next Summer’s competition, which are Australia, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Honduras, Mexico and New Zealand.  These are things we had already assumed but are now official.

The top seven seeds plus the hosts will be placed at the top of each of the groups and the rest are divided into separate “pots” based on location.  You can read about it here.  Each tournament there is the “Group of Death” which contains one of the top contenders plus the first team left out of the top flight and a decent team from one of the other pots.  Four years ago, the US had the privilege of playing 3rd ranked Czech Republic, the eventual champions Italy, and African upstart Ghana.  Hopefully, that doesn’t happen again.

Anyway, I’ll be counting down what I feel are the Top 5 Contenders for the FIFA World Cup.

USA Falls to Brazil

USA vs ItalyI really don’t want to write this because I’m still frustrated about the second half of that game.  The Americans seem to either play brilliantly (see, Spain and Egypt) or fall flat on their faces (see, Costa Rice, Brazil, Italy).  Today, they managed to do both.

The first half was spectacular.  The US hung with Brazil in even aspect of the game.  They looked great.  They carried a 2-0 lead into the half and were poised to win their first FIFA sanctioned tournament.

Instead, the wheels fell off and Brazil scored three unanswered goals (should have been four) and sent the US to a second place finish.
