Shaka Smart

All of you know that it has been a long time since either Bryan or I posted anything, but this couldn’t go unposted. I can’t say that this is necessarily and indicator that Bryan and I will be blogging regularly again, but this site started because we wanted somewhere to write down our thoughts on different things in the sports world, so that’s what I’m using it for now. If you couldn’t tell by the title, this post is about the Virginia Commonwealth men’s basketball coach, Shaka Smart.

Right now it is halftime of the Elite 8 matchup between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Rams of VCU, and Smart’s Rams are currently leading the lone remaining #1 seed Jayhawks by a shocking (Shaking?) 14 points. I don’t know how this game is going to end and 14 points isn’t an insurmountable when there’s a whole half of basketball left, so KU could definitely come back and dominate the second half, advancing to the Final 4 in the process. Even if that were to happen, I wouldn’t care, this first half by itself proves that Mike Hamilton and the rest of Tennessee’s athletic department needs to be drafting up a contract offer for Smart right now.

This guy knows what he’s doing. He’s young and fiery, players can relate to him and he clearly knows how to game plan as well as how to motivate, condition and coach his players. This is the EXACT coach that Tennessee needs to bring in right now.  Smart’s current base salary is $325,000 which seems like a lot of money to you and me but to other Elite 8 basketball coaches, not so much. We could literally septuple (yes, septuple) Smarts current salary and still be paying him less than we were paying Bruce Pearl.

Long story short, I want Shaka Smart to be announced as our new head coach within two days after his team gets knocked out of (or wins) the tournament, whether that’s today or next week it needs to happen.

The second half just started. I might share more thoughts later.

  1. Well that didn’t last long.

  2. What Smart has done during the tournament is just as impressive as Stevens’ run last year with the Bull Dogs !

Both he and Stevens will be closely watched by a number of GM’s around the NBA should they decide to go in another direction because the likes of Calipari are simply retreads that no one ought to even think about touching !

    tophatal …………….

  3. Woulda been nice to get him. I guess you’ll have to try out Martin. Shaka seems like an awesome coach, too bad your dream didn’t work out… Keep posting!
