So How Are You Doing, Sammy Sosa?

Some of you may have seen this already, but I just thought it was hysterical.

Back in 1998 the entire country was mesmerized by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, myself included.  I loved the home run chase as much as anyone.  I was partial to McGwire because he was a part of the hometown St. Louis Cardinals and he could hit balls into the stratosphere.  Sosa, however, had his own charm.  He gave great press conferences and just seemed to enjoy every second of what was happening.

Later we would find out that the home run chase was steroid fueled and it took a Congressional hearing to find out that McGwire wouldn’t talk about the past and that Sosa couldn’t speak English.  But whatever, that’s not what this post is about.  Mr. Sosa is back in the news.

Sosa and his wife Sonya showed up to the Latin Grammy Awards last week looking dapper, as always.  But it wasn’t his clothes that made everyone do a double take.  It was…him.

Let’s take a look at the Sosa we all remember from his testimony:

The hair stripe notwithstanding, he looks like a pretty standard Dominican who is trying to explain away some steroids.  Now let’s take a look at Mr. Sosa at last week’s Latin Grammy’s:

Now…does something look at little strange to you? I just can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe a side by side pictorial comparison will help me.

Oh, yep. That helps.

Apparently Sosa told the Chicago Sun-Times that he is in the process of going through a laser treatment to his skin after spending years playing in the sun.  That sounds nice.  I was unaware of any laser skin treatments that turn your skin from a fairly dark shade to…well, a much less dark shade.  Then again, I don’t know much about laser skin treatments.

I’d like to hear from some of the commenters on this one.  Let’s hear some of your reasons for Mr. Sosa’s sudden skin tone change.

  1. My goodness he looks different… like an aged Ricky Ricardo.

  2. Wow. I had no idea. Michael Jackson revisited.
