Plaxico Burress Pleads Guilty

Read the story about it here.

My opinion on this is probably in the minority, but this is just ridiculous to me. He shot himself and while that is the dumbest thing in the world, he wasn’t trying to shoot anybody else, he wasn’t trying to do anything illegal. He simply had a gun in New York that was registered in Florida. It wasn’t an unregistered weapon, it was just registered in a different state. We have guys like Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones and Michael Vick who have gotten significantly lesser sentences when they were intentionally and knowingly breaking the law and causing harm to other people -or in Vick’s case dogs- and both are currently out of prison. nfl_a_burress4_600

I’ve seen/heard/read numerous quotes from professional athletes saying that feeling the need for protection (ie: a gun) is completely understandable. They were saying this in light of incidents like Darrent Williams, who was shot and killed while sitting in his limo hours after the Broncos final game of the 2006 season. Sean Taylor who was murdered in his home as a completely innocent victim. Richard Collier who was shot while simply sitting in his car waiting for a girl and was paralyzed from the waist down, and had to have his left leg amputated.

Like I said, it may just be me but in my eyes Plax is just an innocent guy (a stupid innocent guy, but still and innocent guy) who felt the need to have some sort of means of protecting himself. He made the mistake of not knowing that once you have a gun registered in one state, doesn’t mean it’s registered every where. And then he made a mistake that only harmed himself. Again, while that reaches levels of stupidity that were previously unheard of (that’s a slight exaggeration) he at least didn’t harm anyone else. And he certainly didn’t do it on purposed. Again, see Adam Jones and Michael Vick, who both got lighter sentences.
