The headline of an ESPN article caught my eye just now and I thought it was something worth sharing on our blog. Ryan Leaf, for San Diego Chargers quarterback, has been indicted on one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance and on seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. Leaf is also being charged with burglary to a habitation. I don’t honestly even know what all of that means, but I know seven counts of anything is never a good thing and when there are a couple other things thrown in as kickers you’re probably not looking at a real pretty situation.
Most of us know Ryan Leaf for being such a huge bust in the NFL, which can easily be argued as the biggest bust in NFL history. Everyone had high expectation for the quarterback from Washington State leading up to the 1998 NFL Draft and there was a lot of debate going on about who would be taken first in that draft; Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf? Excuse me while I catch my breath from laughing. I laughed at the idea of Leaf being taken before Peyton at the time and I certainly laugh at it now. As we all know, Peyton was taken first overall by the Colts leaving Leaf to be drafted second by the Chargers. And if you want to talk about two players that started their NFL careers in basically the same situation but ended up with completely different stories, these would be the two that you should talk about.
Just for kicks, let’s take a look at how these two quarterbacks careers played out, and see how drastically different the numbers are when you put them side by side.
|*Number of games it took Peyton to match Leaf’s career totals|
I don’t even need to compare things like Pro Bowl, All-Pro selections, MVPs, and Super Bowls because Leaf never came close to anything of the sort and if you add up those accomplishments just in those four categories for Peyton it totals up to 18. He also has a hospital named after him, but I won’t get into all of his accomplishments right now because I can go on for a very long time about them.
I hope you enjoyed this comparison, or bashing or Ryan Leaf would probably be more accurate, as much as I did. You probably didn’t but that’s okay, I forgive you.
